A former Japanese internment camp will soon house illegal immigrants. Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda Solis said the Pomona Fairplex could soon house up to 2,500 unaccompanied minors. She said the White House contacted the county for a place to house the surge of unaccompanied immigrant children crossing the southern border.
“I knew without question that it was our time to step up, as Los Angeles County always does,” Solis said in an AP News release.
“Los Angeles County has a responsibility and an opportunity to care for unaccompanied minors coming to the United States. This is not a border crisis, but, instead, it is everyone’s crisis.”
Press California reported on the history of the location. They noted that in 1942, months after the attack on Pearl Harbor, President Franklin Roosevelt authorized the detention of Japanese Americans, fearing they would be loyal to the emperor of Japan.
The Pomona location was selected as one of the camps. A California Historic Landmark plaque near Fairplex commemorates the event. Opened in May 1942, the detention camp had 309 barracks, 8 mess halls and 36 shower and latrine facilities. It reached a peak population of more than 5,000 before it closed later in the year.
Now the location will serve to respond to Biden’s latest crisis—housing the growing number of unaccompanied immigrant children entering across America’s southern border.
California sources have also reported both Long Beach and San Diego have pledged to use their convention centers as temporary shelters for migrant children.
Government facilities currently house more than 20,000 unaccompanied minors. In March, a record of more than 19,000 children were found by U.S. Border Patrol.
The New York Times has predicted there could be more than 35,000 migrant children in American by June. Fox News reported the federal government has opened several “emergency intake sites” in several states to expand bed capacity in response to the surge.
Not all states have opened their arms to receive unaccompanied minors. Iowa’s governor turned down a federal request to house 1,000 children in their state. South Carolina’s governor signed an executive order that will prevent unaccompanied migrant children from being housed in the state.
Texas has been forced to house many of the unaccompanied immigrant children crossing its border with Mexico. Last week, Gov. Greg Abbott (R) asked the Biden administration to close one facility that was overcrowded and kept in poor condition.
The border crisis continues to grow, with estimates of more than one million illegal immigrants entering the nation this year. The Biden administration refuses to call the problem a crisis, yet it is clearly impacting people across the nation.
President Joe Biden tapped Vice President Kamala Harris to lead diplomatic efforts with the nations of Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador regarding ways to address the growing numbers. Harris has gone nearly three weeks without a press conference since being appointed to lead the effort.
There are no easy answers in caring for tens of thousands of children, along with thousands of other adults crossing into the nation. But there better be some answer soon, or America will become known as a refugee nation.

My thought is the interment camp built in the 1940’s will have lead paint and other building materials which cause cancer, so are they even thinking pas their noses on this one. Why are children from Guatemala and Honduras coming to the USA? And how do they even know how to get here? These women in central America have 10 to 15 kids per family. I’ve read several other articles that the children ages 12 to 16 are M 13 gang members or are working for the cartels. These children can’t get jobs, rent an apartment or purchase a car. So why are they coming here? One article wrote as many as 50,000 to 100,000 illegal children could arrive in the USA this year. Who is going to take care of them and pay for it?
