New Hampshire in Play Following Major Ballot Integrity Win for Voters

Hillary Clinton barely defeated Donald Trump in New Hampshire in 2016. She only had 2,736 more votes than him. Just four years later, Joe Biden defeated Trump in the Granite State by 59,267 votes. How did that happen? How did Joe Biden get 57,000 more votes than Hillary Clinton in just four years? We’re not suggesting that there was voter fraud going on in New Hampshire during the 2020 election, but…

Voter integrity groups started to think that something weird had happened in New Hampshire that year. Those concerns were only amplified after the 2022 midterm elections. Some of those groups got together and decided to audit the state’s election security measures and oddly enough, the New Hampshire Secretary of State consented to it.

One of the biggest concerns that the voter integrity groups found related to the security tape that’s applied to the ballot boxes in New Hampshire. Contrary to what people might believe in Fulton County, Georgia, ballots are not supposed to be transported in wheelie suitcases and hidden under a table until late at night after poll watchers have been sent home. Each state has a legal process by which their ballots are supposed to be transported from the precincts to the counting centers.

New Hampshire precincts put their ballots in cardboard boxes and seal them up with tape. The problem that the audit revealed was the tape that was used to secure the boxes. They discovered that the tape could be removed and replaced without anyone realizing it had been tampered with. In other words, the chain of custody on the ballot boxes is not secure.

The person transporting the ballots from a precinct to a counting center could remove the tape, throw away a bunch of ballots for Donald Trump (or whoever), and seal the box back up with no one the wiser.

The Secretary of State’s office announced this week that the tape they’ve been using in New Hampshire for the past few years was to be discarded. They’ll be sending a new tamper-resistant tape from NovaVision to all clerk’s offices across the state. The tape has multiple hidden layers in it and if it’s removed, it leaves behind warnings that the seal has been broken.

Even if the security tape is placed over packing tape, it will leave behind markings that indicate tampering. The new tape is also about $5 to $7 a roll cheaper than the other stuff they’ve been using. Election officials will know immediately if a box has been tampered with and chain-of-custody has been broken.

Should we be concerned about New Hampshire in 2024? After all, it only represents four electoral votes.

We probably should be concerned. It’s impossible to predict how the election will turn out this year. It could be a Trump blowout, but if the Democrats find a way to successfully cheat again, it could end up being very close.

Other than Barack Obama’s two victories there, and whatever that Joe Biden thing was in 2020, elections historically tend to be very close in New Hampshire. Hillary Clinton only won by 2,700 votes in 2016. George W. Bush defeated John Kerry by about 7,000 votes in 2000. Bill Clinton only beat George H.W. Bush in New Hampshire by about 6,500 votes in 1992 (although Ross Perot played a spoiler there that year).

Between 1968 and 1988, Republicans won every presidential contest in New Hampshire. Ronald Reagan won 68% of the vote there in his 1984 reelection landslide. Even Gerald Ford managed to win New Hampshire in 1976—by 11 points, no less!

So, it doesn’t seem farfetched that Donald Trump could win New Hampshire next month. Any election integrity measures that are passed should be counted as a win for the voters. Every other state that is not using tamper-resistant tape on their ballot boxes should be doing so.

Here’s a promotional video from NovaVision so you can see how their tamper-resistant tape will be keeping the ballot boxes secure in New Hampshire:
