When Trump Fought Racism

Since the beginning of his presidential campaign, Donald Trump has been labeled a racist by pundits, the media and voters, who, in most cases, have only paid attention to brief sound bites, excerpts of his speeches or random tweets from his widely followed Twitter account.

Those who dig a little deeper, however, will quickly discover that Trump is far from prejudiced toward any particular groups or individuals of disparate backgrounds.

The Republican candidate does not discriminate when it comes to people whose company he keeps, those he hires or people he caters to as customers and buyers, respectively, of his businesses and real estate properties.

Those who know Trump know that he has a very diverse group of friends, from people such as Governor Nikki Haley of South Carolina (who is Indian-American) to the boxer Mike Tyson (who is African-American) to entertainer and entrepreneur Sean “P. Diddy” Combs (also African-American).

Former neurosurgeon Ben Carson, the sole black GOP presidential candidate in the 2016 race, joined Trump’s organization as an advisor to his campaign after withdrawing from the race in March of this year.

Trump has embraced Carson’s supporters and a number of his ideas. Trump’s campaign spokesperson Katrina Pierson, a near fixture on television news programs, happens to have a mixed-race background.

Throughout Trump’s career, he’s always had a diverse social circle and, like most New Yorkers, is especially accepting of people of different religions, ethnicities, national origins and cultures.

In his hotels, casinos and real estate properties he’s always hired people from a broad demographic spectrum, including Latinos, who many people are convinced Trump has a particular dislike for.

This couldn’t be farther from the truth, as Trump has taken care to note that when he spoke negatively about Mexico in his opening campaign speech, it was regarding that country’s government policies of sending violent criminals across the U.S. border and stealing manufacturing jobs from the United States.

As for the Mexican people as a whole, Trump has nothing but admiration and respect for them. “I love the Mexican people,” he’s said on many occasions. “I respect Mexico as a country… Their leaders are sharper than ours.”

Trump has gone out of his way to note that he’s employed thousands of Mexican workers at his establishments and says he believes they’ve done their jobs in a highly competent, professional manner. To demonstrate that he bears no animosity towards Mexicans as a group, he recently put online a YouTube clip of himself consuming a Mexican taco bowl lunch while at work in his office in New York.

Trump has also determinedly stood up to discrimination against Jews and African-Americans. At the time his private club called Mar-a-Lago, in Palm Beach, Florida, opened, a number of other social clubs in the area had long discriminated against Jews and blacks by denying them entrance, membership or both.

The same Palm Beach town councilors who were members at many of these clubs attempted to put heavy restrictions on Trump’s new property that would have prevented it from earning a profit because they didn’t like the idea of an upper-class club in their town catering to a wide range of demographic groups.

Trump had to sue in U.S. District Court to have their restrictions lifted. From the time it opened, Mar-a-Lago proudly accepted members of all groups and backgrounds, and the club has been lauded by Jewish and African-American civic associations in the area.

Trump has hosted events and created entertainment spectacles that have catered to and starred people from all walks of life and ancestries. Many of the stars of his hit TV shows The Apprentice and Celebrity Apprentice have been non-white, such as talk show host Star Jones, rapper Lil Jon and actor George Takei. His Miss USA and Miss Universe pageants have had contestants drawn from a diverse array of origins and backgrounds.

Trump has also sold many of his properties to people representing an extensive array of nationalities, including, among others, Saudi Arabian Prince Mutaib bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Portuguese soccer player Christiano Ronaldo and Indian businessman Sanjay Shah.

Lastly, one could take the examples of Trump’s first wife, Ivana, who is Czech, and his current wife Melania, who is Slovenian, to show that Trump is not insensitive to ethnicity and religion in even his closest relations.

Trump’s son Barron is fluent in Slovenian, and Trump’s daughter Ivanka converted to Judaism prior to her marriage to her husband Jared Kushner, who is Jewish. The couple has raised their children — Trump’s grandchildren — in the Jewish religion, a fact Trump often speaks proudly of.
