Sometime in the middle of the night on September 13, someone walked up to the Charlie Kirk memorial statue at Turning Point USA headquarters in Phoenix, Arizona, and splattered red paint across his neck and face. They painted a red X over Kirk's face on the accompanying sign, defaced the word "Jesus," and drew an upside-down smiley face on the statue's shirt.
The statue had been standing for three days.
It was unveiled on September 10, 2026 — the one-year anniversary of Kirk's assassination at Utah Valley University. The bronze memorial was meant to honor the 33-year-old founder of Turning Point USA, the man who built one of the largest conservative youth organizations in American history. It lasted 72 hours before someone decided a dead man's memorial needed vandalizing.
Tyler Bowyer, Turning Point Action's COO, posted photos of the damage on X: "This morning we woke up to radical criminals vandalizing our Headquarters. Crossing over Charlie's face, scratching out Jesus and the Cross & spraying red paint on his neck." The red paint on the neck — where Kirk was fatally shot — is either a coincidence or something considerably worse.
Turning Point USA issued its own statement on X: "Vandalism like this is not funny, it's diabolical. The incident happened in the middle of the night because evil never sleeps."
The overnight timing tells you everything about the character involved. This wasn't protest. Protest happens in daylight, with faces attached, in front of cameras. This was someone skulking through the dark to deface a murder victim's memorial. The red paint choice — targeted at the neck, smeared across the face — wasn't random spray-can stupidity. Mikey McCoy, Kirk's former chief of staff, responded on X with a restraint that the vandals don't deserve: "If Charlie could return again and again to the campuses where he was hated and mocked and continue to meet hostility with courage and an invitation to dialogue... Then I can surrender all the anger, and pure disgust that I feel at seeing this to a just and holy God."
Kirk spent years walking onto hostile college campuses where students screamed in his face, threw things, and pulled fire alarms to shut down his events. He kept showing up. He kept talking.
