The Iranian delegation had walked out minutes earlier, about ten minutes into Trump's address, when he turned to Tehran. Two walkouts in one speech.
When your adversaries leave the room rather than sit and listen, that's a concession. Cuba didn't walk out to send a message. Cuba walked out because staying meant absorbing every word in front of 190 other countries.
Trump told the assembly that "freedom will be coming to Cuba" and that the U.S. "will no longer permit threats to America to gain a foothold anywhere in the Western Hemisphere." The regime across the Florida Straits had already felt what that looks like in practice. In January, Trump imposed an oil blockade on Cuba after the U.S. captured Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro. Cuba runs on Venezuelan oil. With Maduro in custody and the supply cut, the island's energy infrastructure has been collapsing ever since.
Trump made sure every diplomat in that room knew it. "It's an absolutely failed state," he said. "It's failing like never before, and it will fall."
He followed that with the details of a Venezuela oil deal — 65 billion barrels, split between Venezuela and the United States. The message to every country in that chamber: the U.S. took Venezuela's oil, broke Cuba's lifeline, and the president came to the UN to announce what had already happened. That room doesn't get a vote on any of it.
Cuba's delegation had already left by then.
