Quick Takes on the Debate and More Hate Mail

On Wednesday night we had the second Republican debate.  In today’s letter I share some quick takeaways and get into some more reader feedback.

Many pundits are calling Carly Fiorina the debate winner, and it’s hard to argue against it.  She stood toe to toe with Trump and really went after Obama and Clinton on Planned Parenthood.

“I dare Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, watch to these tapes. Watch a fully formed fetus on the table, its heart beating, its legs kicking, while someone says, ‘We have to keep it alive to harvest its brain.’ This is about the character of our nation. If we will not stand up and force President Obama to veto this bill, shame on us!” Fiorina said to a loud ovation.

Ben Carson remained calm and likable.  He’s clearly a level headed guy.  Choosing to stay on his issues rather than getting loud and attacking other opponents.  Carson, a doctor, intelligently refuted Trumps claims of vaccines causing Autism.

“Well, let me put it this way, there have been numerous studies, and they have not demonstrated that there is any correlation between vaccinations and autism.” said Carson

Marco Rubio looked sharp.  He also refused to attack any of the other candidates and stay on issues.  This made me think that Rubio could serve as a potential Vice President for another candidate.

When Trump challenged him on his Senate voting record he offered up this great response:

“You’re right, I have missed some votes, and I’ll tell you why, Mr. Trump. Because in my years in the Senate, I’ve figured out very quickly that the political establishment in Washington, D.C. in both political parties is completely out of touch with the lives of our people. That’s why I’m missing votes. Because I am leaving the Senate, I’m not running for re-election, and I’m running for president because I know this: unless we have the right president, we cannot make America fulfill its potential, but with the right person in office, the 21st century can be the greatest era that our nation has ever known.” Rubio said.

One of the more interesting parts of the debate is when Donald Trump and Jeb Bush went at it.  Trump attacked Bush on his brother’s presidency for which he answered back:

“You know what? As it relates to my brother, there’s one thing I know for sure. He kept us safe,”

As for Trump I thought it was mix of highs and lows.  He was definitely more willing to attack his opponents than some of the other candidates.  He even started the debate by claiming Rand Paul shouldn’t even be there.

Time will tell how this whole thing shakes out, but I’ll be watching.

Now some reader feedback from our email on the Trump rally in Dallas:

I did not get to see the debate, but if you are not a trumpeting fan, why in this email did you leave Ben Carson out.  It continues to disturb me that most articles against trumpeting egotism, bullying do NOT mention Ben Carson.  WHY is this consistently true and rarely does Ben Carson get the free press, negative or positive that someone like trumpeting gets for free.   Ben Carson has crowds following him while the main stream and alternate news ignores he’s continuing to gather people just by word of mouth.  GIVE BEN some of this free writing about him.  Build him up and watch trumpet lose some of his support…

Thank you,

Debra

My comment: Debra, thanks for reading.  I assume by trumpeting you mean Trump.  Maybe it’s auto-correct getting the best of you or it’s a jab on Trump.  Either way…  We have written about Trump, but we’ve also written about Ben Carson.  In fact, this past Sunday I wrote a piece on why Ben Carson could be the next President.

Also looks like not everyone we talk too would like to see a Republican in the White House.  Here is some of the most fun hate mail we’ve received:

It was good to see the trailer trash, low information, easily amused, ignorance of the Texas crowd!  They are not even smart enough to know that Trump said absolutely nothing and sounds like a 3rd grader or someone with mental issues….good job Tea party!

-MJ

We also received this gem…

The brains behind the Ole GOP!!!

-David

My comment:  Here’s my take… It doesn’t have to be Trump, but please don’t give me 4 years of Hilary Clinton or Bernie Sanders.  I can appreciate Bernie Sanders wanting to “fix” income inequality.  But how does taxing people to death and giving the US government more money going to fix that.
