Democrats are reportedly fed-up with the embarrassment President Joe Biden has been for their party – and are now speaking out against the failed leader.
“It’s really simple: ‘Be the fucking president!,” one Democratic strategist recently said per The Hill. “I realize it’s tough and you’re drinking out of a fire hose every single day, but there are things you can do to control the public perception and they haven’t done any of that.”
If anything, Biden’s comments have worsened the public’s perception of how he and his administration have handled things.
One example is the baby formula crisis and how his Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in February shut down a major baby formula producer but then the president appeared blindsided when supply dried up.
Officials in the administration and corporate leaders have alternately said it was widely known the supply of formula would drop off while Biden claimed he didn’t know until April.
The president has also been criticized for his weak response on elevated gas and food prices, along with record inflation in general.
“It may come down to not understanding what they’re up against — both the media environment and today’s GOP,” another Democratic strategist, Christy Setzer, said, according to The Hill.
“Biden did speak out on guns, on baby formula, on inflation…but the traditional tactics aren’t breaking through, and it doesn’t seem as though they’re taking in that information, re-trenching, and trying new approaches when it’s falling flat.”
The President has also been extremely frustrated with the media coverage he has received as of late. Biden reportedly held an off-the-record conversation with journalists in which he mainly complained about said coverage according to Politico.
On a recent Air Force One trip, Biden dropped back into the media seating area to “criticize the quality and tenor of press coverage of his administration,” Politico’s reported.
“Joe Biden doesn’t do many off-the-record chats with reporters. So the traveling White House press corps was surprised and intrigued when the president dropped by Air Force One’s press section for one such session with them during a recent trip to the West Coast,” the left-leaning outlet reported.
“But Biden wasn’t just there to field questions. He had his own message to deliver. According to multiple people familiar with the off-the-record session, he used much of his time with reporters to criticize the quality and tenor of press coverage of his administration.”
Biden has avoided any serious sit downs with media in roughly the last 120 days – having only done softball interview with late-night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel.
Politico reported Biden “hasn’t done a sit-down interview with The New York Times’ or Washington Post’s non-opinion sections since taking office, a departure from his former boss Barack Obama, who regularly gave one-on-ones to the Times during his first year. Biden has similarly shut out major wire services like The Associated Press and Reuters. Though he’s given a handful of interviews to the major networks, he still hasn’t conducted a one-on-one with CNN (though he’s done several town hall appearances).”
“I can’t think of a parallel situation – it’s the fifth president I’ve covered and the first one I haven’t interviewed,” Peter Baker, The Times’ chief White House correspondent, told the outlet. “They feel neither the obligation nor the opportunity.”
