President Joe Biden made an announcement that could lead directly to the United States going to war with China.
Biden said that the U.S. was committed to becoming militarily involved if Taiwan was invaded.
Speaking alongside Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida at a press conference in Tokyo, Japan, Biden’s comments came amid increased concern that China might launch an invasion of Taiwan.
“You didn’t want to get involved in the Ukraine conflict militarily for obvious reasons,” one reporter said to Biden. “Are you willing to get involved militarily to defend Taiwan if it comes to that?”
“Yes,” Biden said. “That’s the commitment we made.”
“We agree with the One China policy. We signed on to it, and all the attendant agreements made from there, but the idea that it can be taken by force, just taken by force, is [just not] appropriate,” Biden stated.
Immediately following President Biden’s remarks the White House tried to walk back Biden’s war-provoking words, saying, “our policy has not changed.”
It added that Biden “reiterated our One China Policy and our commitment to peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait. He also reiterated our commitment under the Taiwan Relations Act to provide Taiwan with the military means to defend itself.”
But other members of the President’s administration belied this attempt to smooth things over. Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken, who had traveled with President Biden to Japan for the meeting noticeably shifted and fidgeted in his seat upon Biden’s innuendo of war with China.
Almost immediately China responded to the president’s comments with “strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition” adding that the U.S. should be “cautious in words and deeds on the Taiwan issue, and not send any wrong signal to pro-Taiwan independence and separatist forces.”
Back in October, the White House similarly walked back the president’s comments on Taiwan.
“Yes, we have a commitment to do that,” he said, in a very similar remark to this one.
White House press secretary Jen Psaki reassured reporters at the time that Biden did not mean to signal a change in policy.
“There has been no shift. The President was not announcing any change in our policy nor has he made a decision to change our policy,” she said. “There is no change in our policy.”
The decision by the White House to walk back the president’s comments shows confusion and weakness coming out of the administration – something which China will likely use to its advantage.
China flew 14 fighter jets through Taiwan’s air defense identification zone while Biden was arriving in Asia. According to Stars and Stripes, Taiwan’s airspace has been encroached on more and more in the past year.
Biden said that China was “flirting with danger” in relation to China’s flight maneuvers in Taiwanese airspace.
He also added that the U.S. was “fully committed” to Japan’s defense and that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine “undermines the foundation of the global order.”
This poor excuse for a man has got to go. Since the 2020 election debacle, the United States and every citizen within it have been through enough pain and anxiety to last a lifetime.
