Former President Trump will headline North Carolina’s GOP Convention next month in Greenville. The event will mark the former president’s first major speaking engagement since CPAC in February.
“President Trump won North Carolina in 2016 by promising to put America First, and he won North Carolina in 2020 by keeping that promise,” North Carolina GOP chair Michael Whatley told Fox News in a statement.
“President Trump delivered real results for North Carolina by rebuilding the military, standing strong against China, and unleashing the American Economy,” Whatley added.
Trump’s first visit follows ongoing rumors that his daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, will run for the vacant Senate seat in North Carolina.
The visit also hints that recent reports the former president will restart his famous rallies this summer. The popular events ended during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The combination of events continues to fuel speculation regarding the president’s own future ambitions. Trump has long teased of running for president again in 2024. The topic will certainly come up during his upcoming trip to the Tar Heel State.
Trump has said previously he won’t make a formal decision on whether or not to run in 2024 until after the 2022 mid-term elections. However, he may be opening the door for Lara Trump’s senate run announcement. With Trump’s full support and her high favorability in the state, she would likely stand as a top Republican primary contender.
If so, she could become the second Trump to serve in Washington following the 2022 midterms. The addition would also serve as a help in GOP efforts to retake power in the Democrat led Senate.
The Senate current stands at an even 50-50 with Vice President Kamala Harris as the tie-breaking vote, meaning the Democrats have the majority.
Donald Trump looks to be playing the long game at this point. First, help Republicans with the House and possibly the Senate in 2022. Second, decide whether to run in 2024.
Third, he’ll need to select a running mate.
Former Vice President Mike Pence served well, but the two ended Trump’s term divided over how to responded to voter fraud allegations.
If Trump does not run, Pence may take a shot himself. Pence was asked recently whether or not he would run in 2024 and he refused to say he wouldn’t. He also has a line up of public events over the next few months that looks like an attempt to appeal to Trump voters without alienating his former running mate.
But assuming Trump continues with a comeback, he’ll need a running mate that will unite conservatives beyond the previous election. Strategically, a female leader like South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem or former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley could work well.
Others have pushed for South Carolina Senator Tim Scott. The sole black Republican Senator, his popularity soared following his April rebuttal to President Joe Biden’s speech to a joint session of Congress.
Then there are a couple of “big names” increasing in likability in the party. Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo was a strong Trump supporter and has continued to build his platform since leaving his office. A Harvard lawyer and former CIA leader, his intelligence background would serve the nation well.
Others have pushed for Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. His strong push back against Biden’s nonsense policies has garnered the respect of conservatives nationwide. If Trump doesn’t run, and maybe even if he does DeSantis may run himself.
One thing is certain: Trump is not done. His North Carolina speech will be one to watch, with many wondering what’s next for the former president.

Tin Scott is one of several good choices. There are other good choices also such as Ron DeSantis, Christi Noem, and I especially like Nikki Haley. Any of these would be a good choice for Trumps VP.

The only leader we have in the Republican party is President Trump, without him the party is nothing.
