Can Trump Win Minority Voters Away from the Democrats?

The running narrative among progressive politicians and the mainstream media is that if minorities don’t vote for Hillary Clinton they should fear a Donald Trump presidency. Even more, fear is raised by comparing reasonable voter ID law in states like North Carolina with the Jim Crow laws of a different era.

Unwilling to surrender to this narrative, Trump delivered a direct appeal to minorities when he asked a simple question last week in Dimondale, Michigan. The GOP nominee for president argued that Hillary Clinton and her fellow Democrats have taken advantage of African American voters and taken their votes for granted.

In light of the dismal failure of Democrats to deliver on their promises, he asked minorities that when it came to voting for him, “What the hell do you have to lose?”

Trump expanded this theme by appealing to every African American citizen who wanted to see a better future to vote for him. “What do you have to lose by trying something new, like Trump?” he asked. “You’re living in your poverty, your schools are no good, you have no jobs, 58% of your youth is unemployed, what the hell do you have to lose?”

During a follow-up interview with Trump, Judge Jeanine Pirro of Fox News said she had never heard a candidate that willing to “turn a paradigm on its ear”. She followed with facts that cannot be refuted, major crime is up over the last five years in cities that historically vote Democrat, and that crime predominantly affects minorities.

From 2011 to 2016 crime is up in:

  • Baltimore 37%
  • Chicago 64%
  • C. 30%
  • Milwaukee 66%
  • Louis 34%There has been Democratic control in those cities for the last:
  • Chicago: 85 years
  • Louis: 67 years
  • Milwaukee: 108 years
  • Baltimore: 49 years
  • C.: 41 yearsThe truth is that Donald Trump does lag far behind Hillary Clinton with minority voters, however a recent Los Angeles Times poll shows that it may not be nearly as hopeless as that liberal narrative wants America to believe.

According to the Times poll, Trump is doing far better than either McCain or Romney among that group of voters.

Trump’s support among black voters has Democrats privately concerned in spite of their public confidence. Over the last ten presidential election cycles, the highest black vote share for a Republican was for Bob Dole with 12% in 1996. However, Trump has 14.6% of the black vote in the most recent LA Times poll that followed his law and order speech in speech in Milwaukee.

It’s true that Democrats have successfully cast themselves as the party that cares about the real needs of minorities. Considering that Republicans must fight the battle on two fronts, both against Hillary and the media, the task can appear daunting if not impossible. However, in reality, all Donald Trump has to capture is 25% of the African American vote to win in a landslide.

Trump dominates white voters and would beat Hillary by only gaining 4.5% more of the white vote than Romney. Lest we forget, Romney did little to excite his own base four years ago. It’s easy to see why Trump is wise to ignore the strategist, continue to appeal to his base, and at the same time reach out to the average working class black voter.

One group that the Democrats have been ignoring is second-generation lower-middle class to middle class blacks. At a rally in suburban Michigan, Trump said, “no group in America has been more harmed by Hillary Clinton’s policies than African Americans. Look at how much African-American communities are suffering from Democratic control.”

He told a crowd in North Carolina something similar when he reminded minorities that 58 percent of their youth are unemployed.

Democrats were quick to deride Trump for his comments in Michigan, with Democratic National Committee official Brandon Davis saying Trump “has shown little interest engaging the black community and his comments underscore just how out of touch he is with the African American community.”

It looks from polls like the Los Angeles Times that Trump doesn’t have to be in touch with the entire minority community. He just has to reach those working class blacks and Hispanics that know that they have been sold a bill of goods. Who understand – What the hell do we have to lose?
