A group of Republican sellouts worked feverishly with the Democrat Party last week to come up with a “bipartisan” package of new gun control bills that will not do anything to curb future school shootings. The only good news about these bills is that they are not quite as terrible as the things the far-left Democrats and Joe Biden were requesting. There’s no “assault weapon” ban, for instance. But it does have some terrible provisions that will restrict the rights of law-abiding Americans. The only question now is whether it actually has a chance of passing the Senate and the House.
First, here is the list of flaccid, weak-willed cowards in the Republican Party who just sold out their own base. If one of them is your Republican Senator, be sure to vote against them at the next available opportunity, since they’ve violated their oath of office:
Thom Tillis, John Cornyn, Roy Blunt, Richard Burr, Bill Cassidy, Susan Collins, Lindsay Graham, Rob Portman, Mitt Romney, and Pat Toomey.
That’s ten Republican Senators, which is a little scary. With a 50-50 divided Senate, 10 Republican traitors is all that are needed to pass the 60-vote filibuster threshold. Senators Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ) were both on the “bipartisan” working group that put together these dreadful bills. Since they’re probably the two most conservative members of the working group, there won’t be any help from them. Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) is likely a “No” vote since she’s in a tough primary race right now, but that still leaves 60 votes in place unless the American voters can convince one Republican to jump ship.
What does the package of bills do?
First, it incentivizes states to pass “red flag” gun laws. These are laws in which a neighbor or an ex-spouse that doesn’t like you can turn you in to the authorities and then they’ll raid you with a SWAT team and confiscate your guns, even if you’ve never been accused of a crime.
Law-abiding Americans who committed no crime and haven’t even been accused of a crime have been killed by police carrying out red flag gun seizures in states like Maryland. No matter what state you live in, you wouldn’t want these red flag seizures to become a reality.
The package of bills throws a bunch of money at mental health services. What will this do to prevent school shootings? Nothing, since the authorities don’t do anything to stop mentally ill people from shooting up schools in the first place. The Uvalde school shooter and most other mass shooters are already on some sort of psychotropic mind-altering prescription drugs – which means they’re receiving mental health treatment. More federally funded mental health services are not going to make a difference.
The bills will make straw purchasing firearms illegal. That’s already a federal crime, but this package of bills will somehow make straw purchasing guns… illegaler.
Finally, the bills would create a waiting period for 21-year-olds so that authorities can review their juvenile records before they can buy a gun. That sounds like a great idea, right?
Actually, no. It defeats the whole purpose of “juvenile” records in the first place. If a kid makes a mistake when they’re a teenager and reforms their life, they shouldn’t have their constitutional rights permanently stripped away when they become an adult. That’s literally why we have juvenile records, so kids are not permanently punished for the dumb things they do as teenagers. Juvenile records are generally sealed when a person turns 18, so those records shouldn’t be used against them. But that’s what Republicans and Democrats want to do: Punish people under 21 who want to exercise their Second Amendment rights.
It seems highly likely that this package of bills will be swiftly passed in the US Senate. The good news is that it looks like the voters may only have to sway one or two Senators to defeat it. This is an election year, so that’s entirely possible.
The other good news is that the progressive caucus in the House hates this package of bills, because they don’t think it goes far enough. If they vote with House Republicans, and the Republicans stand up for their constituents, the bills won’t make it through Congress. We’ll keep you posted.
