President Joe Biden offered a very divisive speech on voting rights in Georgia on Tuesday that included multiple misleading claims to argue for support for his bill.
The remarks were intended to urge support for a federal voting rights law known as the Freedom to Vote Act instead he insulted everyone who didn’t immediately agree with his positions.
South Carolina Republican Sen. Tim Scott called Biden’s speech “offensive to me.”
“His rhetoric is beyond disingenuous. As a Black southerner whose family lived through Jim Crow, it’s insulting,” Scott said.
Biden and Harris both claimed Republican voting reform laws are racist because they require photo ID. The claim is far from the reality, as photo ID is required for many areas of life without being considered racist.
The president also called on the Senate to “change the rules” by ending the filibuster to pass his party’s voting rights bill. The filibuster is the Senate rule Democrats enacted that requires most legislation to pass by a 60-vote supermajority.
“Biden, as a senator from Delaware for more than three decades, staunchly defended the filibuster. In recent weeks, however, Biden has backed carving out an exception to it to pass Democrat-backed federal election legislation,” the Daily Signal noted.
Now Biden supports changing the rules. Why? To pass a bill his party wants. Biden is not alone in his evolving views. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) long opposed changing the filibuster in the Senate.
Why? Because Republicans held the majority. Changing the filibuster would have made it impossible for Democrats to block legislation they opposed. But now Schumer has likewise changed his mind simply because his party now has the numbers.
Just two Democrat senators, West Virginia’s Joe Manchin and Arizona’s Kyrsten Sinema, continue to oppose ending the filibuster. They both realize that the advantage is only temporary and would end up hurting their own party as soon as Republicans regain power in the Senate.
Instead of changing the rules to get the result they want, Democrats could actually negotiate toward legislation favorable to both parties that would help the American people. Alas, they refuse to do that. Biden promised to be a president who would unite the country, but now he wants to change the rules because he can’t even get 60 votes to agree on anything he wants in the Senate.
If anything, Biden’s words and actions have led to greater division in our time than any time in the past 40 years. It has a lot to do with his failures to deal with economic challenges that are fueling inflation and high prices that are hurting everyday Americans at record levels.
If Biden is so concerned about Democrats winning elections, maybe he should actually deal with the problems his party has created. Whether the border, the economy, crime, the pandemic or other failed areas, the way to win is by helping Americans, not by misleading them or changing rules to win elections.
Americans may not catch every Biden failed fact check, but they can spot the problem with the current strategy that’s as old as the playground bully. Winning doesn’t require changing the rules. It requires doing something worth other people supporting.
That’s amazing that Dementia ridden Beijing Joe would have the Power to Spew Falsehood with him being BRAND DEAD and BLIND EYE !
